"Preetjes Molen" te Heule (nabij
Kortrijk, België) is een vlaszwingelwindmolen, gebouwd in 1866
door Ivo Deprez, toenmalig eigenaar van de molen. In Heule en
omgeving stonden in die tijd meer dan tien vlaszwingelwindmolens.
"Preetjes Molen" is heden ten dage de enige nog bestaande
vlaszwingelwindmolen in Heule en omgeving, en voor zover ons bekend
in Europa...
Op 20 januari 1872 is er in de molen brand ontstaan, veroorzaakt door de wrijving van het vangwiel. Dit gebeurde tijdens een poging tot stilleggen van de molen in een felle storm. De molen werd terug opgebouwd en bleef daarna in werking tot na het overlijden van de molenaar in 1913.
De kinderen hielden de molen verder in gebruik tot het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in 1914. Nadien trad verval in.
Einde de jaren dertig werd de molen voor een eerste maal hersteld, spijtig genoeg enkel voor het uitzicht. Op 28 april 1944 werd de molen bij koninklijk besluit beschermd als monument. In 1959 werd de molen opnieuw hersteld maar ook nu enkel voor het uitzicht.
In 1992 werd de molen in erfpacht genomen door de v.z.w."Vrienden van Preetjes Molen" . Na een grondige en deskundige studie werden de restauratiewerken van de vlaszwingelmolen aangevat.
Deze eerste fase, die de restauratie omvatte van de onderbouw in metselwerk, en de bovenbouw van de houten molenkast ("torenkot") samen met de staak en de molenas, werd einde mei 1995 voltooid.
De tweede fase werd op 6 juni 1996 aangevat en omvatte de restauratie van het wiekenstelsel en het mechanisch gedeelte met de zwingelplanken in de molen zelf. Op 6 oktober 1996 werd de nu draaivaardige molen, in bijzijn van de nodige prominenten, officieel in dienst gesteld.
De vlaszwingelmolen is een unicum en het is zelfs de enige windmolen om vlas te zwingelen die nog bestaat in Europa. Daarenboven is hij ook nog een bewijs van de vroegere bloei van de vlasnijverheid in de Leiestreek en een overblijvend beschermd monument.
De restauratie en het onderhoud van de molen is puur vrijwilligerswerk, totaal onbezoldigd, met hart voor de molen en het erfgoed in het algemeen. Morele en financiële steun zijn altijd welkom...
"Preetjes Molen" is indeed a small flax scutching windmill, constructed in 1866 by Ivo Deprez, who owned the location. In the town of Heule and in the wider area there were more than 10 flax scutching mills at that stage. Today, however, only one of these is left. As far as we know, there are no equivalents of the Mill Deprez throughout Europe.
On 20 January 1872 there was a fire, caused in an attempt to stop the mill during a ferocious storm. The brake being overheated, caught fire. The mill was reconstructed afterwards and was fully operative until the death of the miller in 1913. His children took over, but the World War decided otherwise. The mill fell into disrepair.
In the late 1930's, the mill was restored, but for cosmetic reasons only. When the proper authorities officially listed the flax scutching mill as a historic monument on 28 April 1944, hopes for more adequate restoration were regained. In 1959, however, a new restoration project proved to be rather another superficial reconditioning of what once was the "Preetjes Molen".
In 1992, the mill was let out on tenure by long lease to the newly founded non-profit organisation Vrienden van Preetjes Molen ("The Friends of the Flax Scutching Mill Deprez)" . Only after thorough and scholarly inquiries in the history of this particular mill, a reconstruction was started. The first step included the groundwork and the brickwork (ground floor), as well as the construction of the wooden superstructure (in Dutch "torenkot"), the millpost and the sail axle. The second phase, with the reconstruction of the wings, was started on 6 June 1996. Also, the machinery inside and the swinglebars were installed. On completion (at date and officially speaking still provisional), the mill was fully operational. On 6 October 1996, the flax scutching mill Deprez was officially reopened.
The "Preetjes Molen" is unique, and as a windmill for flax scutching, it is conceivably the last in its kind in Europe. Moreover, the mill is tactile proof of the flax industries, which once flourished in the valley of the river Leie, and as such, it is a listed monument.
The association of Friends of the Flax Scutching Mill Deprez ("v.z.w. Vrienden van Preetjes molen") set itself the purpose of preserving the mill in its landscape. The immediate goal was a total reconstruction of the mill in the original state, as documented by early photographs. Moreover, it is felt that the preservation of the mill includes the mechanics of the turning itself. The mill can therefore be visited, and the braking and the scutching of flax can actually be shown.
The preservation of the windmill is pure voluntary work, wholely unpaid, and fuelled by the love for "Preetjes Molen" only. Your sympathy and - inevitably - your financial support will be welcomed.

Die „Preetjes Molen" bei Heule (nähe Kortrijk) ist eine Flachsschwing-Windmühle, die im Jahre 1866 durch Ivo Deprez, dem damaligen Eigentümer, gebaut wurde. (NB: Durch 'Schwingen' werden die gebrochenen Flachsfasern von den noch anhaftenden Holzfasern getrennt)
In Heule und Umgebung standen zu dieser Zeit mehr als zehn dieser Mühlen. Die „Preetjes -Mühle" in Heule ist heute noch die einzige Flachsschwing-Windmühle und unseren Wissens auch die einzige in Europa.
Am 20. Januar 1872 entstand ein Brand durch Überhitzung der Bremse, als versucht wurde, die Mühle während eines heftigen Sturmes zum Stillstand zu bringen. Die Mühle wurde wieder aufgebaut und blieb in Betrieb bis zum Tode des Müllers im Jahre 1913. Seine Nachkommen betrieben die Mühle weiter bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs. Danach verfiel sie.
Zu Ende der 30er Jahre wurde die Mühle restauriert, allerdings nur äusserlich. Am 28. April 1944 wurde sie unter Denkmalschutz gestellt und im Jahre 1959 wiederum eine nur oberflächliche Wiederherstellung unternommen.
Im Jahr 1992 übernahm der Verein „Freunde der Preetjes-Mühle" dieselbe in Erbpacht und nach einer gründlichen wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung wurde mit der Restauration begonnen.
Die erste Phase bis Ende Mai 1995 umfasste das Backstein-Fundament sowie den hölzernen Mühlen-Kasten ('Torenkot') zusammen mit der Stange und der Windradwelle. Die zweite Phase beginnend am 6. Juni 1996 hatte die Wiederherstellung des mechanischen Teils einschliesslich der Schwingbalken sowie der Windmühlenflügel zum Inhalt.
Am 6. Oktober 1996 wurde schliesslich die nun wieder betriebsfähige Mühle der Öffentlichkeit übergeben.
Diese einzigartige Mühle legt Zeugnis ab von der früheren Blüte des Flachsanbaus im Tal der Leie. Ihre Wiederherstellung und Unterhalt sind das Werk von Freiwilligen, die in vielen unbezahlten Arbeitsstunden dieses Zeugnis einer vergangenen Zeit der Nachwelt erhielten.
